Vision

To develop and promote Curtin Malaysia’s industrial and external relations, in the process of achieving University’s strategic objectives.

Mission

To act as mechanism in the Faculty of Engineering and Science, serving in areas related to industrial and external relations.

Industrial training

Industrial training provides engineering students with practical work experience in real-world environments before graduation. At Curtin Malaysia, this training is a compulsory requirement for all engineering students, who must complete a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks.

Industrial training helps integrate academic knowledge with professional practice, develop essential engineering skills, and enhance employability. This experience also allows employers to evaluate potential candidates, making it a valuable pathway to future career opportunities in engineering.

Scope of industrial training

The scope defines the areas of work and experiences students may encounter during their industrial training placement. The following sections outline the relevant training areas based on engineering discipline:

Placement procedure

Registration process for industrial training

Industrial training briefing is provided by the department advisor
Admin officer registers students on Moodle
Student seeks and obtains a placement*
Student registers online through Moodle (Form A)** for advisor approval and attaches:
1. Placement offer letter
2. Latest academic transcript
3. Reflection report
Advisor from the respective disciplines checks Form A for approval. (If rejected, repeat from Step 3)
Student will receive an approval notification via email. This confirms that the student has been registered in the Industrial Training database.

*Students may request a Letter of Undertaking via Moodle to support their placement application.
**Student must complete Form A after receiving the offer letter from the company.

Refer to the IEEC Committee list for the department advisor.

Completion of industrial training

Student completes a minimum of 12 continuous weeks of training and 480 working hours
Student submits the following documents online through Moodle:
1. Training completion letter
2. Student Feedback (Form D)
3. Report, log book, and an A3-sized presentation poster
Advisor assessment
Admin officer submit the results to the Student Services Department in Week 12 of Semester 1
Outcome of the training:
1. Pass: Faculty issues a Certificate of Completion to student and the record will be updated in the Industrial Training Database
2. Fail: Faculty notifies the student. Student needs to seek consultation with advisor and repeat the industrial training process.

FAQs

1. If I plan to do my industrial training at the end of the year, when should I register?
Meet your industrial training advisor in your engineering department and register for industrial training throughout the year. Seek an industrial placement early so you can complete registration before the end of the second semester each year.

2. Are training areas restricted to those listed in the Industrial Training Handbook?
The list of training areas is not comprehensive and serves only as a guideline. If you are unsure whether your chosen area is acceptable, consult your industrial training advisor in your department to confirm that you are placed in a relevant engineering company.

3. If I have registered with Company A and later receive an offer from Company B, can I cancel my registration with Company A?
You may switch to another company (Company B) only if you have not accepted the offer from Company A and you properly decline it. If you have already accepted Company A’s offer, you must submit a resignation letter or email and state your reason.
You must also re-register the new placement with Company B and obtain approval from your industrial training advisor.

4. If I have started training in a company and later find that I do not like it, can I stop and change to another company?
You must contact your department advisor immediately if you wish to terminate your training. You must provide valid reasons and obtain approval for a new placement through official registration. However, changing your industrial placement is discouraged. You are expected to handle any issues with the training company in a professional manner.

5. Will the visiting advisor inform students before his/her visit?
We will inform students before the visit. Therefore, make sure you provide the correct contact details and check your emails regularly.

6. Will the visiting advisor visit every student who is undertaking industrial training?
No, the advisors will only visit some students. However, they will try their best to meet as many students as possible.

7. If I am going to transfer to Perth campus in Year 4, do I still have to complete industrial training?
Yes, you do. To meet Engineers Australia’s requirement, the Perth campus requires undergraduate engineering students to complete a at least 480 hours of industrial training (equivalent to 12 weeks if you work for 5 days a week, 8 hours a day).
If you are transferring to the Perth campus, you must provide a logbook showing the number of hours worked, a letter from the company confirming your completion of training and total hours worked, and a minimum 12-page training report.
Therefore, you are advised to complete your industrial training according to the Malaysia campus requirements and later contact the administrative assistant to transfer all required documents to the Perth campus.

During the Orientation Week, the Faculty introduces new students to the faculty environment, academic expectations, and opportunities for involvement.

A meaningful occasion for graduating students to celebrate their achievements and connect with peers and faculty before entering the next phase of their journey.

Alumni Homecoming

Brings alumni back to reconnect, network, and contribute to the faculty community through shared experiences and collaboration.

Curtin Geology Club	Curtin Geology Club is a well-established and relevant organisation based in Curtin University Malaysia that promotes the knowledge and industrial application of geology. Our mission is to raise awareness of geology-engineering related field of industry and career paths, and ensuring member’s growth through talks and programs.
Curtin Malaysia IMechE Student Chapter	Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is an independent professional association and learning society based in London, United Kingdom. IMechE represents mechanical engineers and the wider engineering profession. Curtin IMechE Student Chapter strives to improve the Curtin community and the wider Miri province through engineering by developing well rounded engineers, promoting engineering, informing opinions and, encourage innovation. We offer various kind of events such as hands-on workshop, technical workshop, industry site visit, competition and talks to Curtin community.
Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter	The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is a global hub for chemical engineering, biochemical and process engineering professionals. The objectives of the student chapter is to cultivate the Curtin Graduate among chemical engineering students, enhancing students with their own skills, strengthening relationship between members and develop their social networking skills, and creating the opportunity for students to get hands-on experience before stepping into the industry.
Engineer Australia Curtin Malaysia Student Chapter	EA Curtin Malaysia Student Chapter are led by volunteer student committees, supported by Engineers Australia’s International and Tertiary teams based in Australia. Serving on a student chapter committee is a great way to develop both your professional and personal skills as a student engineer.
IEEE Curtin Malaysia Student Branch	IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Through highly cited publications, conferences, and technical activities, it inspires a global community of engineers and innovators. We extend IEEE membership benefits to student branch members and other participants through academic and technical workshops, large-scale exhibitions, student competitions, site visits, and industry talks.
IEM Curtin Malaysia Student Section	The Institution of Engineers Malaysia was established to promote and advance the science and practice of engineering across its disciplines, while providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and professional discussion. Its students section support members and aspiring engineers with guidance for their post-graduation journey, and the club also works to raise awareness of science and engineering within the community.
IMM Curtin Student Chapter	Institute of Materials Malaysia Student Chapter (IMMSC) of Curtin University Malaysia is a non-profit academic based student body organization, with the aim to promote awareness to the society especially for the students that are involved in material science, technology and engineering.
