Background
Dr Han Yi Chiew is a Senior Lecturer in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Curtin University Malaysia and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He received his Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) in Electronic and Communication Engineering from Curtin University, Australia, in 2015 and completed his PhD in Electronic and Computer Engineering at Curtin University Malaysia in 2019. His doctoral research focused on wearable inertial sensing technologies for quantitative gait analysis in rehabilitation.
Since joining Curtin University Malaysia in 2020, Dr Han has contributed extensively to teaching, research, academic leadership, and industrial engagement. He currently serves as Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Networking) programme and Chair of the Board of Studies for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has led curriculum enhancement and programme accreditation with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Engineers Australia, established Curtin Malaysia’s integrated circuit design initiative through collaboration with the semiconductor industry, and works closely with industry, healthcare, and government partners to advance engineering education, translational research, technology commercialisation, and workforce development.
Dr Han’s research interests include wearable sensing technologies, embedded systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), signal processing, artificial intelligence, integrated circuit design, and human motion analysis. His work focuses on developing practical, low-cost intelligent sensing systems for healthcare, rehabilitation, industrial monitoring, and smart connected devices. He has published extensively in leading IEEE journals, and his research has led to industry collaborations, the establishment of a research spin-off company, and broader societal impact. He also actively supervises research students, contributes to international conferences, and leads STEM outreach initiatives that strengthen engagement between academia, industry, and the wider community.
