Research ethics

All Curtin University human research ethics applications, amendment and compliance reports are submitted and processed through the InfoEd system.

Researchers must obtain ethics approval before starting any research involving human participants.

Submit an ethics application

All human research ethics application must be submitted through the InfoEd system. Staff and students need to login into InfoEd using their Curtin login ID and password. If you are unable to login due to access being denied, please email to ROC-ethics@curtin.edu.au and provide your full name, ID number, and state your issue.

InfoEd training guide

Training materials and tutorial videos on how to use the InfoEd system (submitting applications, responding to amendments, and submitting reports) are available through Curtin’s internal learning platforms, through iLecture help.

Curtin staff or students may access these training videos by logging in to the ECHO system using their Curtin login ID and password.

Approval to recruit Curtin students and staff for research purposes

Obtain approval from the relevant Faculty Dean or Head of Department before recruiting Curtin students or staff as research participants. Approval must be granted before contacting potential participants.

Apply through the Office of Strategy and Planning portal.

Conference support

Financial assistance is available to eligible researchers presenting their work at academic conferences.

Eligibility

To apply for conference support, you must:

Have a HERDC-qualifying publication
Submit your publication through Elements
Meet the conference paper requirements.

Conference paper requirements

HERDC criteria for a conference paper

Such papers must be:

published in full e. an abstract is not sufficient
peer-reviewed (the standard is scrutiny akin to that applied to manuscripts submitted to journals), the review must be for the full paper – reviews of only abstracts are not sufficient
presented at conferences of national or international significance.

Types of conference publications which do not meet the criteria include:

papers that appear only in a volume handed out to conference participants
keynote addresses
plenary addresses
poster presentations
abstracts of conference publications.

Eligible research activities

Activities that support the conduct of research and therefore meet the definition of research include:

professional, technical, administrative or clerical support staff directly engaged in activities essential to the conduct of research
management of staff who are either directly engaged in the conduct of research or are providing professional, technical, administrative or clerical support or assistance to those staff
the activities and training of HDR students enrolled at the HEP
the development of HDR training and courses
the supervision of students enrolled at the HEP and undertaking HDR training and courses
research and experimental development into applications software, new programming languages and new operating systems (such R&D would normally meet the definition of research)

Activities that are not eligible for conference support

Activities that do not support the conduct of research must be excluded, such as:

scientific and technical information services
general purpose or routine data collection
standardization and routine testing
feasibility studies (except into research and experimental development projects)
specialized routine medical care
commercial, legal and administrative aspects of patenting, copyright or licensing activities
routine computer programming, systems work or software maintenance.
