Civil and construction engineering

Our Civil and Construction Engineering department is vibrant, due to our dynamic academic and technical staff members, as well as our bright students. Our staff members come from highly-reputable universities all over the world, with specialised knowledge that runs the gamut of Civil and Construction Engineering, ranging from geotechnical engineering, to structures and construction management, to water and environmental engineering.

Curtin’s Civil and Construction Engineering students are a lively bunch, bolstered by the Curtin Civil Society (CCS) which plays a major role in our department, supporting us in our annual activities such as Civil Camp and Civil Week. The atmosphere created by CCS and our department has fostered close ties among students, and our students’ participation in our activities, as well as student – staff contact, are exceptional.

Curtin’s Bachelor of Civil and Construction Engineering (Hons.) course is a good balance of theoretical background and practical experience throughout the four years of study. Students are equipped with the practical skills necessary to begin working effectively as a graduate engineer immediately after completion. Our Civil and Construction Engineering graduates have found work all over the world, and are dealing with megaprojects, bettering people’s lives. Others have found their passion in smaller, more specialised work. We ensure that our graduates have the understanding necessary to maintain their skills and competencies throughout their professional career. Due to its excellent quality, our Civil and Construction Engineering course is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), as well as Engineers Australia (EA).

Curtin’s Bachelor of Enviornmental Engineering (Hons.) course was developed by integrating fundamentals from three majors, namely Chemical, Civil and Construction Engineering as well as Environmental Sciences. The core curriculum is designed to address major global concerns, namely the environment conservation and engineering sustainability. The programme provides numerous opportunities to our graduates to involve in these specialised areas by integrating the fundamental knowledge acquired in development across a wide range of economic sectors. The breadth and depth of our curriculum will also equip the students with the complex engineering problem solving skills as well as innovative and creative engineering experience. The graduates will experience great employment prospects as the demand for environmental engineers is growing rapidly in both the domestic and international market. Due to its excellent quality, our Environmental Engineering Programme is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), as well as Engineers Australia (EA).

Background

Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu is a distinguished academic executive and leading geospatial scientist, currently serving as the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor at Curtin University Malaysia. His career trajectory includes senior administrative roles, notably as the former Vice President at Hoa Sen University in Vietnam, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia, demonstrating strong strategic leadership in higher education across Asia.

Holding a Docent title and a Doctor of Engineering in Geoinformatics, his core research expertise lies in Geospatial Data Analytics, with a focus in applications for disaster management and sustainable urban development. Drawing on over two decades of global experience in Japan, Sweden, and Malaysia. Professor Vu is also an influential figure in promoting open science. He is an elected Charter Member of the Open-Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo), a Fellow and Council Member of ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology.

Background

Wong Kwong Soon joined Curtin University Malaysia in 2014 as Senior Lecturer. He worked as a design engineer in a civil consultance firm specialise in road and bridge construction before became a lecturer at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. He involved in soft ground improvement, retaining structures, slope stability as well as pile foundation for bridge construction. He also involved in the design and construction of superstructure of bridges. During his PhD study, he worked on tunnelling related project, such as tunnel face stability and tunnelling in expansive soil. He has about 10 years of experience in road and bridge related works. Starting from 2019, he started working on digital construction including building information modelling. Besides, he also involved in agriculture since 2018.

Background

Dr Tang joined Curtin Sarawak in 2005. He obtained his Bachelors and PhD degrees from the University of Manchester. His PhD was focussed on pollutant dispersion in coastal flows near a headland. Dr Tang’s other research interests include treatment of septage and wastewater with engineered wetlands. He has also been involved with consultancy projects such as staff training in the area of Environmental Engineering, and others. Dr Tang is currently the Dean of Learning and Teaching for Curtin University Malaysia, having served as the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Engineering and Science (2017 – 2022), Head of the Civil and Construction Engineering department (2012 – 2017) Head and Coordinator for the Engineering First Year programme (2006 – 2011). In his current position as Dean of Learning and Teaching, Dr Tang is focussed on supporting and developing the university’s academic staff in their learning and teaching practices, learning and teaching innovation and scholarship of learning and teaching (iSoLT) and students’ learning.

Tina has been with Curtin Sarawak since 2014. She graduated with PhD in Structural Engineering from Curtin University in 2014. Her undergraduate was in Civil and Construction Engineering from Curtin University. Her research focuses on the area of cold-formed steel.

Dr. Tan Yee Yong joined Curtin Malaysia in 2017. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Doctorate of Philosophy from Curtin University Malaysia. Background

I joined Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) in January 2020, previously worked as Senior Lecturer in International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) before joining Curtin Malaysia. I obtained both my BEng (Hons) (Civil) and PhD (Civil) from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). My study interest for PhD involves Erosion and Sediment Yield Control in Equatorial Region. In addition, I have been exposing myself to the industry by working as Part-time Environmental Consultant; mainly involving myself in environmental-related civil engineering design projects, such as conducting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), formulation of Environment Management Plan (EMP) and Environmental Monitoring Report (EMR). I am also registered as an EIA Consultant with Natural Resources and Environment Board, Sarawak (NREB).

Background

Dr Hazwan Jusoh joining Curtin University Malaysia as an associate lecturer in the Department of Civil & Construction Engineering. He received his PhD from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in the field of water and wastewater engineering. Previously, he worked as as a researcher at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia in 2016. Background 

Dr Paran, currently a Lecturer at Curtin University Malaysia under Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Civil and Construction. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering, specialized in wastewater phycoremediation, along with a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Civil Engineering from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. Dr Paran’s research primarily focuses on practical applications of microalgae for wastewater treatment (phycoremediation) and biomass production, as well as the use of phytoremediation technology for bioremediation of contaminated soil and transforming waste materials into value-added products. His impactful work is evident through over 20 cited papers indexed in Web of Science and Scopus. As a registered graduate engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a certified professional technologist by the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), Dr Paran’s expertise contributes significantly to the field, particularly in sustainable wastewater treatment and environmental remediation practices.

Dr. Lai joined Curtin University Malaysia in August 2024. Previously, he was working as a water supply and drainage design engineer at Jurutera Perunding Wahba Sdn. Bhd. and Jurutera Adda Sdn. Bhd. From April 2021 to July 2024. He had completed his bachelor’s degree and PhD at Swinburne Sarawak. His previous research was regarding rainfall-filling models with novel artificial neural networks. Currently, Dr. Lai’s research interests focus on the application of artificial intelligence in civil engineering contexts, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) to perform hydrology and climate predictions, including missing data variables.

Background

Dr Oon Yoong Sin holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering and her research focuses on sustainable wastewater treatment systems, particularly photosynthetic bioelectrochemical systems, including microbial fuel cells and microalgae-based systems. Her work integrates environmental engineering principles with microbial metabolism and electrochemical processes to elucidate nutrient transformation pathways, enhance resource recovery, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in low-carbon wastewater treatment systems. She is also a recipient of the President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) awarded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has industry experience as a research scientist that enhances the translational relevance of her research.

Background

With over 15 years of experience in civil engineering, environmental and sustainability fields, I am equipped with scientific research and technical expertise, regulatory compliance, deliver successful EIAs, and embed sustainability into operations. My blend of consultancy, research and academic rigor allows me to provide actionable, data-driven solutions for complex environmental challenges. My doctoral research area involves identification of hazardous substances in landfill leachate, environmental impacts of the pollution as well as the sustainable remediation measures for the contamination issues.
