These points are known as milestones. The defined milestones are Milestone 1, Milestone 2, and Milestone 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to formally apply to your faculty to have your progress reviewed for each milestone. For each milestone there is an application form which you will need to complete and submit to your supervisor along with the required supporting documentation to commence the milestone review process within your faculty. You will also need to provide an oral presentation on your progress for each milestone review.<\/p>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block styled-heading \"\n        role=\"complementary\" aria-label=\"Heading\">\n\n    \n<div class=\"block-heading\" data-segment=\"dom\">\n                                <h2 class=\"block-heading__title \" id=\"milestone-1\">Milestone 1<\/h2>\n            \n                        \n                                <div class=\"block-heading__content\"><p>Milestone 1 lets you present your proposed research project and receive feedback from your discipline group, school or faculty. This feedback helps you refine your research plan and build your research support network at Curtin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n            \n                            <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<div class=\"notification notification--notice small\" data-segment=\"dom\">\n    <span class=\"ico ico-info\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M16 2a14 14 0 1 0 14 14A14 14 0 0 0 16 2zm0 26a12 12 0 1 1 12-12 12 12 0 0 1-12 12z\"\/><path d=\"M15 15h2v6h-2z\"\/><circle cx=\"16\" cy=\"12\" r=\"1\"\/><\/svg><\/span><p>Data collection (e.g. lab experiments, surveys, questionnaires or interviews, etc.) must not be conducted by provisional candidates.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block accordions\" role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n        \n\n    <div class=\"accordions__container\">\n                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"what-are-the-conditions-for-milestone-1\" aria-expanded=\"false\">What are the conditions for Milestone 1?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"what-are-the-conditions-for-milestone-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>On receipt of your official notification of enrolment, you will be considered a\u00a0<em>provisional candidate<\/em> until your application for Milestone 1 is approved by your faculty\u2019s Associate Dean of R&amp;D and Curtin Malaysia Graduate School (CMGS). CMGS will notify you once your Milestone 1 application has been approved.<\/p>\n<p>The following conditions are considered by the CMGS in reviewing your Milestone 1 application:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Definition of an acceptable research program, including its objectives, methodology, facilities, resources and a time schedule for completion<\/li>\n<li>Attainment of the necessary level of knowledge and skills to proceed with the proposed research program<\/li>\n<li>Acceptance of the nominated Thesis Committee<\/li>\n<li>Certification by the faculty\u2019s Associate Dean of R&amp;D that adequate facilities and resources are available for the proposed research program<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate identification of ethical issues for research involving animals; humans; ionising radiation; microwaves, lasers or ultraviolet light; or recombining of DNA<\/li>\n<li>Completion of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/researchtoolkit.library.curtin.edu.au\/data\/research-data-management\/data-management-planning\/\">Data Management Plan<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Completion of any required coursework (if applicable)<\/li>\n<li>Successful completion of the Research Integrity Training<\/li>\n<li>Successful completion of the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rig.curtin.edu.au\/home\">Research Initiation Guide<\/a> (RIG).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"when-is-milestone-1-due\" aria-expanded=\"false\">When is Milestone 1 due?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"when-is-milestone-1-due\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>An application for Milestone 1 is required to be approved by the Curtin Malaysia Graduate Studies Committee within the following time frames:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time candidates: 6 months from enrolment in the thesis component<\/li>\n<li>Part-time candidates: 12 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Masters of Philosophy (MPhil)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time candidates: 3 months from enrolment in the thesis component<\/li>\n<li>Part-time candidates: 6 months from enrolment in the thesis component.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your Milestone 1 application must be assessed and approved by your faculty prior to being sent to CMGS for assessment. We advise you to submit your application and all required documents to your faculty for assessment well in advance of the due date.<\/p>\n<p>Where coursework is\u00a0required, candidates are normally expected to complete the coursework component before submitting an application for candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>If you fail to have your Milestone 1 application approved within the specified timeframes, it will result in your academic status being amended to\u00a0<em>Conditional<\/em>. If enrolment conditions are still not met within the designated timeframe, your enrolment will be cancelled.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"what-is-required-for-my-milestone-1-presentation\" aria-expanded=\"false\">What is required for my Milestone 1 presentation?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"what-is-required-for-my-milestone-1-presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>For Milestone 1, you will need to submit to your supervisor:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/curtin.edu.my\/student\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/08\/Milestone-1-Application-Form.pdf\">Milestone 1 application form<\/a> with the relevant sections completed.<\/li>\n<li>Research proposal, prepared as per the requirements set out in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/curtin.edu.my\/student\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/08\/Research-Proposal-Information-Sheet.pdf\">Research Proposal Information Sheet<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Turnitin originality report (\u2264 30%) for your research proposal.<\/li>\n<li>Any relevant evidence that you have completed your\u00a0Research Initiation Guide,\u00a0Research Integrity Training\u00a0and\u00a0Data Management Plan.<\/li>\n<li>Any relevant evidence that you have completed any required coursework.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Oral presentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For Milestone 1 you will also need to prepare and present an oral presentation on your research proposal to your Faculty. Your faculty will arrange a time and venue for your presentation. The thesis committee needs to discuss the date and time, and the venue of the candidacy oral presentation with the internal assessors and AD, R&amp;D. \u00a0Once the agreed date and time are decided, AD, R&amp;D will then announce the presentation schedule to all students and faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>The approval will be based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The assurance from the thesis committee that the research proposal is in an academically satisfactory state of iteration and is therefore ready for oral presentation, and<\/li>\n<li>A confirmation that the thesis committee, internal assessors, and AD, R&amp;D are confirmed to attend the presentation, and<\/li>\n<li>A confirmation that at least 50% of the members of academic staff of the host faculty\/department will be present, and<\/li>\n<li>A suitable period of advertisement for the presentation, which is at least one week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>                    <div class=\"accordion\">\n            <button class=\"accordion__heading accordion__toggle\" aria-controls=\"what-is-the-review-process-for-milestone-1\" aria-expanded=\"false\">What is the review process for Milestone 1?<span class=\"ico ico-chevron-fat ico--deep-blue\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 0 32 32\"><path d=\"M10.91 30.41l-2.82-2.82L19.67 16 8.09 4.41l2.82-2.82L25.33 16 10.91 30.41z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content content\" id=\"what-is-the-review-process-for-milestone-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Your milestone application, research proposal and oral presentation are reviewed by your Faculty&#8217;s Associate Dean of R&amp;D, two assessors, and your thesis committee.<\/p>\n<p>You will receive feedback on your written proposal and oral presentation. Depending on the conventions in your discipline\/faculty, the feedback on your written proposal and oral presentation might be combined. When you have received your feedback, you should work with your supervisory team to address the comments and finalise your application. Faculty&#8217;s Associate Dean of R&amp;D will usually require students to submit a document setting out how they have responded to reviewer comments at the time that they submit their finalised application.<\/p>\n<p>Once the review process has been completed, your application will be forwarded to the CMGS. Based on the material submitted, Graduate School will determine if you application for Milestone 1 is accepted or rejected.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate Research School (Perth)\/CMGS will inform you of the decision.<\/p>\n<p>If your application for a milestone is rejected, your academic status will be classified as conditional. The student training is in Blackboard, accessed via\u00a0Student OASIS.\u00a0 See\u00a0Research Integrity Training Information\u00a0for\u00a0instructions on how to access and enrol in this unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Initiation Guide (RIG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0RIG\u00a0is Curtin\u2019s hazard identification tool which will help train you about how to safely handle any hazardous research materials, train you about how to protect yourself and your research participants from the impacts of your research, and identify and obtain the permissions you need to get before you can start work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turnitin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turnitin is a text matching software that checks for originality in a document by comparing its passages against a database of sources. To access, Login to\u00a0Student OASIS. Click on the link to Blackboard, go to the \u2018My Units\u2019 or \u2018My Organisation\u2019 section, and select the \u2018Research Integrity \u2013 HDR\u2019 training. From the left hand menu, select the heading \u2018Originality Checking\u2019. Full instructions are located in the ensuing screens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ethics and safety committee approval<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is essential that you examine the ethics and safety guidelines related to your field of study to determine whether it\u2019s necessary to seek approval from any University Ethics and\/or Safety Committees. For further information see the Library\u2019s\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.library.curtin.edu.au\/c.php?g=202401&amp;p=1333108\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Data Management<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>web page. The University provides the\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmp.curtin.edu.au\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Data Management Planning Tool<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to assist you in creating your plan and accessing the University\u2019s data storage facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wa.gov.au\/government\/document-collections\/retention-and-disposal-of-state-records#sector-disposal-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Australian University Sector Disposal Authority (WAUSDA)<\/a>\u00a0 requires all data you have collected in your research to be retained for a minimum of seven years after the completion of the research or seven years after it is published, whichever is later.
